What you could see if you were to visit one of our math classrooms
As I walked into the classroom, I saw a group of students standing around their teacher, Coach Akina, who was holding a basketball. "Okay class," Coach Akina said, "let's say I want to know how many points a basketball team would score if they made three-point shots on three consecutive possessions." Coach Akina then proceeded to explain the multiplication principle, using the example of three consecutive three-point shots to calculate the total score.
The students were engaged and asked questions as Coach Akina walked them through the example. He used the basketball to illustrate his point, passing it to different students and asking them to calculate the score. The students were eager to participate and worked together to come up with the correct answer.
As the lesson came to a close, Coach Akina emphasized the importance of understanding the multiplication principle, not just in sports but in everyday life. The students left the classroom with a newfound understanding of the concept and a renewed appreciation for the role it plays in their academic and athletic pursuits.
